Tenth grade. First day. I've got my schedule in my hand and there it is - geometry. And it gets better: my bestie is in a different class, so it's me, a subject I've been dreading all summer, and a teacher I've never met and can't read yet.

Hey doll. Tenth grade. First day. I've got my schedule in my hand and there it is - geometry. And it gets better: my bestie is in a different class, so it's me, a subject I've been dreading all summer, and a teacher I've never met and can't read yet.

But none of that was the loudest thing in my head. The loudest thing was: is my fit okay? How's my hair? And of course - of course - a zit showed up on my chin that morning. Right on my chin. And every single person was going to see it.

You'd never have known. Because I put on a face. I always put on a face.

What We're Talking About Today

If you're a Christian teen girl dealing with back-to-school anxiety and nobody in your life has any idea, you're not imagining it and you're not doing anything wrong. The girls who look the most fine are very often the ones white-knuckling it hardest - and the looking-fine part is exactly what keeps anyone from checking on you.

Today we're walking through two things: why nobody in that building is watching you as closely as you're watching yourself, and what to do with the parts of your schedule that didn't go your way.

What You'll Learn in This Episode

  • Why the girls who look the most "fine" are often the ones struggling the most

  • What's actually running through your head the morning you walk in looking totally normal

  • Why the girl you're sure has it all together is doing the exact same math about you

  • How to flip the script on the schedule, locker, or lunch period you didn't want

  • The baby steps that absolutely count as brave when you're already managing anxiety

Key Takeaways

1️⃣ Nobody is watching you as closely as you're watching yourself. I was convinced every person in that building was going to notice my chin. Not one of them was looking at my chin - they were all too busy running their own version of my morning. The thing you're sure everyone can see is almost always the thing only you can see. Yours just feels louder because you're the only one who can hear it.

2️⃣ You think your face is working, and everybody else's face is real. Both can't be true. I had a friend - a teacher's kid - and I promise you I thought she had every single bit of it together. I'd bet money she had her own version of the zit that morning. That's the trap: you can't see anyone else's face from the inside of your own. So you assume you're the only one performing, when really the whole hallway is.

3️⃣ When it's not ideal, flip the script. The schedule, the locker, the lunch period, the class without your person. Mine was geometry while my bestie was somewhere else. Here's the flip: it's not "I don't have my friends in here." It's "I don't know these people yet." Same class, same seat, different sentence in your head.

4️⃣ You do not have to go all in. Baby steps count. Make eye contact. Say hi first. Answer someone's question kindly. That's the whole assignment. You're already learning to manage anxiety - you don't need to pile "become a different girl by Friday" on top of that. Small isn't a lesser version of brave. Small is the right size for where you are.

A Verse to Hold Onto

"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people?" - Galatians 1:10

The face I put on every morning was approval-seeking. I just didn't have a name for it back then. And the people I was performing so hard for weren't even watching - God already saw the whole thing. Zit, geometry, and all.

Closing

Looking fine isn't a character flaw, doll. You built that face for a reason and it protected you. It's just not the same thing as being okay, and it costs you more than you think.

You can spend an entire school year performing for a room full of people who are too busy performing to notice. God isn't in that room waiting to be impressed. He settled this before you ever walked in.

You're not behind, and you're not the only one. You're a girl who got good at hiding it - and you don't have to be that good at it anymore.

This week, pick one baby step for day one. Just one.
